AAA Thursday - Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

It is the first Thursday of the new year. So what better time to talk about rebirth and the budding of what once was into what is. For this I speak of FFVII Rebirth. FFVII is undoubtedly one of the most popular Final Fantasy titles out there. Many of us fell in love with RPGs solely because of this title. There has since been many spin offs such as Ever Crisis, Before Crisis, Advent Children and The First Soldier. There has even been a few movies attempting to encapsulate the awe that is Final Fantasy VII.

So it was only natural that with the expansion of technology we got ourselves a remake. Final Fantasy VII is no stranger to remasters, in fact they've remastered FFVII three times, more than any other Final Fantasy title. But a remake is so much more and after the success that Final Fantasy VII Remake had, selling 3.5m copies in just three days, not to mention that Square Enix already had planned this all out before Remake even dropped. It is no wonder that we got ourselves another sector of Gaia to explore. When I say sector I mean entire world by the way. Unlike Remake, Rebirth allows access to the entire planet of Gaia. On top of that they've added to each zone, making the planet even bigger then the original.

Don't worry though, you will be able to unlock mounts to help you explore this massive landscape. The most iconic mount is of course the best to us. The chocobo has all three options, land, air and ocean, making them the most versatile mount type. You'll also get access to several other mounts that have more specific uses. The buggy for example is best on sandy terrain and can drive across shallow waters. It cannot be summoned anywhere or at anytime like the chocobos can, instead being exclusive to sandy areas. But having options is always a good thing and the mounts all have their own entertainment value, if nothing else.

Exploring the beautiful and bountiful world of Gaia is one of the best things that Rebirth brings to the table. You can explore nostalgic areas of FFVII like the Gold Saucer and enjoy new and creative story lines. Race your chocobo in the racing minigame for unique rewards and chocobo upgrades to help breeding new chocobos. Enjoy the uniquely interesting atmosphere of the Cosmo Canyon. Or kick back on the beaches of Costa del Sol. Rebirth really did these zones some justice introducing new story arcs and loot tables to make these nostalgic zones feel fresh and new.

But Rebirth offers so much more then just a cool revamped open world to explore. The party formation and dynamic combat mode makes battle an entirely new beast in this remake. One of the most interesting things implemented in Rebirth is the party formation mechanics. This involves a relationship system where your choices while playing impact the affinity you have with each member of your party. This then determines how they synergize together, unlocking special abilities based on their connection.

Additionally to make combat more alluring and to prevent people from scaling to powerful Rebirth has introduced a dynamic combat mode. This automatically adjust enemies power based on your characters level. Of course you can always revert back to standard difficulties like Normal or Hard mode. But dynamic combat mode really does bring life to this game, adding a little extra challenge to the otherwise mundane.

As far as combat itself Rebirth brings back the real-time Active Time Battle (ATB) system. This means most real-time attacking and defending is automated. It allows players to focus on the command menu options such as special attacks, casting magic or using items. This is an expansion of the original FFVII system. Working in mostly the same way but with some additions such as the aforementioned synergy system.

All and all the game is a load of fun and definitely worth the $69.99 price tag. Also its worth mentioning Square Enix is releasing this game for steam on January 23, 2025. I hope you enjoy your next big adventure across the diverse landscape of Gaia! As always feel free to leave a comment regarding your thoughts on the game or blog.
